The Whale or the Mermaid (a Fantasy)

Translated from the Ladino. Read the original

Einstein says that everything is relative. He speaks of science, but I believe that in life, in the world, everything is relative. Every idea is interpreted in a different way. Everything depends on the point of view, on the angle from which one looks. In the window of a fitness centre (for getting into shape) an advertisement shows a very shapely woman in a bikini, sunbathing, almost inviting you to swim. The text says: 'This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?' A woman with a body very far from the one in the advertisement sends the centre her interpretation of the advertisement:

— The friends of whales never leave them in a corner. They have admirers like dolphins, seals, even curious people… — They have an active sex life, they get pregnant, they give birth to very sweet baby whales. — They swim in the sea, they play, they even have the luck to see marvellous places like the corals of the islands of Polynesia. — They know how to sing cheerful songs. They even have a CD they brought out not long ago. — Apart from certain humans, there is no creature that approaches them to harm them, to mistreat them.

Speaking of the mermaid, to begin with, there never was and never will be a mermaid. — Accepting that they exist, they will have a great balagan to know what identity they have, making long queues in front of the psychologist to know whether they are fish or woman. — They have no sex life. And they do not have what is necessary to live a sex life. — They cannot have children. And what man will approach a woman who smells like fish?

— In the end, I prefer to be a whale. The advertisements show only thin people as beautiful. But I prefer to lick an ice cream with my children, have a cheerful chat with my husband, share a chocolate with my friends. With time we are putting on kilos, because we are putting so much wisdom into our heads that it no longer fits and is being distributed to the other parts of our body. For this reason we are full of culture, well educated and very happy. — Einstein said that everything is relative. This woman said: 'Give me fat, I'll give you beauty.'
